It does provide a bit of an ego boost and celebrity moment to see the blue badge, but here’s the real kicker: There are significant business/brand advantages to being Twitter verified. Government. Journalism. and other key interest areas.

Whenever I present or give classes on monetizing social networks and online communities people usually have two questions. Collectibles buy an account and get special badges like the Pro badge above. Or Foursquare style reward badges – most retweeted, most linked. Two, how can Twitter make money?

I attended the SXSW Interactive (tech) Festival, which overlaps with the SXSW Music and Film Festivals, to some extent. The focus of each event is different, with the music and film events having been around longer than the interactive one. They are huge, many with several hundred people at a time packed into crowded clubs.
