Also, while I think it’s somewhat less likely that a first-time visitor will tweet or Digg or Stumble your work (I’d love to see a study on that), you should make that process as easy as possible as well. Even though we're all just the text of our name or a simple avatar/pic to each other, we're all real people inside.

If you are AT&T and your avatar was the face of your CEO, you’re doing it wrong. If you are building your *personal* brand, by all means, use your avatar (and face!). Yes, Twitter and Facebook and Digg and other niche sites cost nothing to join, making social media a relatively free marketing option. There’s one catch: you end up spending time on these networks, and that’s where the money starts adding up. There are no barriers for entry and everyone can participate.

One of the best things I ever did when I started my main blog today, Digital Photography School, is to create avatars, one of the best things that you can do. Gradually over time, I began to deepen my avatars. If you want to answer worksheets to help you work through creating avatars, it’s there. Does anyone remember Digg?
