With all the wonderful feedback on my guest post about how we utilize WordPress multisite and discussion forums to build community for our rather niche market, I thought I might offer some detail about specific tactics and network plugins we use to keep members informed, active and increasing in number. Here’s how we did it.

Its awesome to have a lot of friends, and even more so being active in the hottest blog communities. But with messages coming in from other MyBlogLog members & the communities you follow, on top of your many friend requests and updates, we understand that sometimes all those alerts can be a bit much. For example, one of my Friendster aliases is Times Square. I needed to differentiate Digg from social media because they actually are part of a distinctive community (and as you know, I’m very passionate about Digg so it really did deserve its own category). The jury is still out for me on Twitter.

You have to create content, be part of many communities, and proceed incrementally. Too often, the humanization part gets overlooked in an effort to create a “user-generated video contest widget that we’ll launch on Facebook with support from Ustream.&# That’s not a “wave the magic wand&# scenario.
