With all the wonderful feedback on my guest post about how we utilize WordPress multisite and discussion forums to build community for our rather niche market, I thought I might offer some detail about specific tactics and network plugins we use to keep members informed, active and increasing in number.

I scan 275 RSS feeds in Google Reader and I use dozens of bookmarklets and shortcuts to help me manage it all. This works for any RSS feed, not just bookmarks. Things that stop the “spread&# of your website include: RSS Button – it’s not our job to tell people how to consume our blog, it is to get people to consume it. Hubspot is a great example – they give great content, build audience trust, then pitch product in the last 15 minutes. People spread awesome.

With StumbleUpon, it’s all about the users and the content that the community enjoys. Either way, it’s good to take full advantage of all the features available and become a genuine, helpful user of the community. In other words, your avatar is going to be seen in a lot of places on the service so pick something memorable.
