Does it matter who follows you on Twitter or Facebook?

So unless the follower truly warrants ignoring, ignore their comments and mentions of you at your own peril. You never know when someone who follows you is going to go viral with a comment. Interesting question, isn’t it? Generally speaking, I’d say the answer is yes, but the REASONS you should care might surprise you.

The difference between an audience and a community in new media

Responding to a comment, tweet or post using the person’s ACTUAL name (even if you have to look it up) builds community. Audiences are automated: Emails can be sent, resent and followed-up on automatically. Auto posting RSS feeds on a Twitter account reaches audiences, but doesn’t create community. Communities are personal.
