So the question is–are there things that today’s B2B marketers can learn from history, specifically, the tremendous success of Facebook and the rise, fall and possible resurrection of Myspace? From its founding, Myspace took off like a rocket ship while Facebook had a much slower ascension from launch. My answer is certainly–yes!

The High Point: Facebook In 2004, I joined Facebook and my behavior changed drastically. The Irony: MySpace Okay, so in my previous paragraph, I mention that you should be an early adopter of social networks. Below, the pie graph: Quite honestly, I don’t feel that I’ve lost out by not taking MySpace more seriously.

Mark Zuckerburg launched Facebook in 2004 for his friendsand classmates at Harvard University, then continued to branch it out to otherschools. Nobody expected it to even overtake social-networking giant MySpace,as it did in 2008, and eventually have more users than the USA has citizens. So how did this happen?

My first profile was on Myspace , my first friend was “Tom from Myspace,” and my first post was something like, “Myspace is awesome!” Do you remember your first social media profile? Or, how about your first social media post? ” The rest is history. Is this perhaps the next big thing ?

Facebook’s intended purpose when created by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 was for connecting college students with each other in their respective universities. I joined in early 2004 (I have a 6 digit Facebook ID, 102991, and signed up when Facebook was open to about 3 universities). I want to say yes. But I’m not there yet.

Based on my findings, Problogger started in 2004, Copyblogger started in 2006, Daily Blog Tips started in 2006, Steve Pavlina’s Blog started in 2004, and Entrepreneur’s Journey started in 2004. You will notice that all these blogs did not just start yesterday or even last year. They have been around for years now.

See, I’m one of those Facebook users who have been on the service since February 2004, which is quite a long time considering Facebook was open to about three schools at the time that I signed up.
