Yet another proven method is to submit your website URL to web-directories with decent Google page rank, ex: Yahoo and D’moz. Create a spreadsheet to document the submission process, with fields that include: directory URL, Category submitted, URL submitted, date of submission, title/anchor text submitted, status.

It is one of the many reasons that content marketing has become so popular, as brands in other industries put an emphasis on content development and promotion and essentially become publishers themselves. You’d be surprised at how many existing links (both internal and external) may be pointing to incorrect or discontinued URLs.

Tracking these links is important because it shows you which marketing efforts are bringing you results. Next to a detailed breakdown of where all your links are coming from, you can also see the value of those links through Domain Rating, URL Rating, External, and Social. Backlinks from websites with high DR are always more valuable.

And yes, you need a mixture of both Dofollow and Nofollow links, because that’s what natural link building looks like. How do you know whether a blog is Do or Nofollow? Personally, I use SEOBook Toolbar (free download), which has a function to highlight Nofollow links on any given page. Your tip can be my #10!
