Industry colleagues are those I have met in person (typically in a casual atmosphere or at conferences). I needed to differentiate Digg from social media because they actually are part of a distinctive community (and as you know, I’m very passionate about Digg so it really did deserve its own category).

He’s also the founder of Digital Photography School, he has a conference of his own. One of the best things I ever did when I started my main blog today, Digital Photography School, is to create avatars, one of the best things that you can do. Gradually over time, I began to deepen my avatars. Does anyone remember Digg?

Also, while I think it’s somewhat less likely that a first-time visitor will tweet or Digg or Stumble your work (I’d love to see a study on that), you should make that process as easy as possible as well. Even though we're all just the text of our name or a simple avatar/pic to each other, we're all real people inside.

But, again, it’s worth it, and it doesn’t cost as much as attending a conference on the West coast, paying for a magazine ad, or a TV ad, etc… so, when comparing options, I believe social media is inexpensive. j [link] Steven-Sanders I used to use that exact picture as my avatar everywhere. You can save your profile (bio, URL avatar, background color scheme, and background graphic) to the server and upload a custom one at will. I’d love to see a mute – particularly for “twilight&# , “biggest loser&# “football&# or the latest hashtag of a conference I couldn’t attend.
