People are flocking to sites like Twitter and Facebook and other communities because they are online communities where they can learn from and hang out with their peers. Even though there are thousands upon thousands of micro-niches and active communities discussing the most peculiar topics, there’s still only room for a handful of ‘rockstars’ to emerge from each of them. It’s really about having an impact on your own niche community, however small or obscure it may be.

It’s clear that anti-Digg sentiment is silenced, and is often suppressed. Google is undoubtedly huge and they could simply shrug their members off like Digg does to its much smaller userbase, but instead they engage the community and that’s why Google is such a positive brand.

Yet the sentiment is true — writing, especially long form, is hard work, and the work doesn’t end when the words are completed. On the other hand, in Internet Marketing, you sure can, so I wonder if it’s an apples-to-oranges comparison. It happens in religious communities too. Probably not. You usually do.

I have actually heard this exact sentiment from several companies and agencies recently, wondering whether they should increase their Facebook efforts because the size of the member community is just so overwhelming. If your community is there, then you should be too, and the question is really rhetorical, isn’t it?
