If your video has a million views but no advertising on it, you won’t be making any money. YouTube makes money off the advertising space, so they will pay based on how much exposure your video generates for that advertising space. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines because strikes on your channel will disqualify you.

Niche categories tend to acquire more views because you’re not competing with a popular category like personal blogs or travel. YouTube is a video channel first and foremost, but it’s still important to create community and engagement on your channel. Have no community strikes on your channel. Have a linked AdSense account.

If you market via PPC it gives you a decent estimate of the advertiser competition as well. Google Apps Google disappoint me in a number of ways (like allowing Mahalo to rank with all of their crappy, computer generated pages because it makes them more money via Adsense) but I can’t deny their services make my life much, much easier.
