Social media connections are those I know through a variety of online forums, the blogosphere, Twitter, and the like (but I generally don’t befriend someone immediately; I still give it time). I get fixated on one community and ditch the last, yet I still have my profiles on them and they usually get outdated within minutes.

Done correctly, social media is about developing meaningful relationships with customers and prospective customers in their natural habitat. You have to create content, be part of many communities, and proceed incrementally. Many successful social media programs take months (or even more than a year) to really germinate.

Further, if we also take a close look at some of the domains, you will notice they try to establish a type of authority for the blogger. Patience is required in building a community, seeing real results with monetization and building traffic.

Depending on what type of page you are creating (for a business, publication, celebrity, etc.) Don’t shy away from giving your community the information needed to find you elsewhere both online and offline. Give them a reason to want to communicate. After all, every interaction shows up on the Fan’s news feed.

You know, Facebook actually prohibits these types of accounts in their Terms of Service , but Facebook’s staff doesn’t actually act upon these infractions, apparently. These are friends who have no direct ties to the industry, but in using social networks, we’ve formed close bonds and friendships. It’s not.
