Recently I noticed a Twitter hashtag that was short, made sense, and was even fun to use. I’m talking about #crushit, the hashtag associated with Gary Vaynerchuk’s new book — wait for it — Crush It! I use #socialcorp for my book SocialCorp, but it just doesn’t have the zing that #crushit does.).

Tweets are short at 140 characters, but a Twitter avatar must visually represent a user in just 2304 pixels. If you’re a conservative, you’ve probably changed your avatar to show your affiliation with TCOT (Top Conservatives on Twitter), even though you find grassroots political activism a little confusing. People do crazy things.)

I also have a lot of rules for how I use Twitter, so I thought I would share them. I was very deliberate when I wrote “rules for how I use Twitter.” I wouldn’t presume to tell you how to use Twitter. Block people who tweet your Twitter name in connection with marketing and follower scams. Be relevant 90% of the time.

Speakers may also have copyrighted their presentations, or may (in my case) quote substantial portions of a copyrighted book or other work. As the author of a book, I also understand the need for copyright protections for commercial content. Who knows — it could lead someone to buy my book or choose to engage my company.

Could you get by for a full 24 hours, or more, with no access to Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed or any of your other favorite social media tools? And you can’t cheat and use TweetDeck to access Twitter. If Twitter or Facebook had the ability to shut you out for one or more days, would you enable it? For how many days?
