Recently in the Wall Street Journal, there was an article titled , Why Successful Branding Still Happens Offline. Basically where social takes off and takes on magical tones is when we get to associate a name with a physical face and voice and not an avatar. It can really connect people in infinite ways. That’s the money shot.

Constrained chat is a gateway drug to unconstrained chat, which can lead to personal meetings. Note: It was pointed out to me after I published this that the Wall Street Journal piece was written not by Walt Mossberg, but by Katherine Boehret, and edited by Mossberg. There are dangerous people online who prey on children.

Image via Wall Street Journal blog. First, the kismet of discovering interesting people that are around you , enabling you to meet up with them, or at least connect with them virtually. Maybe it’s a sign of the social media times, where we know people by their avatar more so than their street address of phone number.

Keep a reading journal. Thursday Bram has some tips on journaling in one of her Lifehack posts. I also really want to keep a reading journal, but I find it hard to sit down and take the time to write about it after I finished reading a book. Get your own Avatars at Gravatars. Talk about it. Successes: While she’s enjoyed meeting the blogger community where she has received a lot of support, she realised she needed to write for her avatar, not other bloggers. She also fell into the trap of buying too many books and courses. She realised she needed to work out her priorities. Tip: Look long term.

A venture into Second Life could be a great way to meet more teachers and explore new potential teaching tools. Create a free edublog to get your own comment avatar (and more!). Without that it’s just a journal. I try to meet my teachers where they’re at, rather than force a standard on them.
