This “technographics” application scours the web daily to see what technology is being adopted (or dropped) by more than 30 million different sites. Feed a website address to BuiltWith, and it can tell you about the framework, widgets, hosting, scripting, shopping cart software, content delivery and advertising networks, and more.

If you’re selling ads privately, you might be able to ask the advertisers how many people coming from your site went on to make a purchase. #4: Whenever someone clicks one of your ads, it will take that person away from your site. For large sites with a lot of search engine traffic, it isn’t necessarily a problem.

For instance, bloggers writing about spirituality or politics often find advertising doesn’t work so well. If they’re on your site because they want information, it might make sense to sell them an information product. If they’re on your site to connect with others, they might instead be willing to subscribe to a membership community.

I also learned how to drive traffic to my site. They were costing me money, and not just from me buying domain names and hosting. I discovered AdSense (Google’s advertising network), and started putting their ads on my blog. So that year (and the next) I worked really hard on bringing more traffic to my sites.

It also began to cost me money to run for hosting, domain, design etc. It was around this time that other Advertising Networks began to appear. At the time, AdSense was my #1 source of income but putting Chitika on my site almost doubled that income overnight and allowed me to go full time as a blogger!
