WordPress is arguably the best blogging software available, especially for those of us who enjoy self-hosting. Surely only post-graduate degrees now hold credibility?

Niche research is a little like viewing your website analytics where it’s really pointless checking your stats if they don’t lead to you making any site changes. Basically it lets you see which websites use the same hosting company, have the same IP addresses and use the same Google Analytics and Google Adsense tracking codes.

Now, bloggers have access to trending analytics data so they can predict which hot topics they should be writing about next. For example I could have shared the Matt Cutts blog ranking tip I’m about to reveal in a separate post, then copied 90% of my WordPress SEO article, slapped it on the end and then hit publish.

To identify this subset of content, go to Google Search Console and open the Search Analytics report. You can do this using the Search Console > Queries report in Google Analytics. I tried loading and looking at Analytics on my phone’s Chrome browser and it was horrible. The most useful report is Search Analytics.

Pay attention to the little ideas you get that keep you awake at night like I paid attention to, back in 2005, when I couldn’t sleep at night.
