It all starts with the Pulse Report that Chevron had produced by Edelman (their PR firm) using their Alterian’s SM2 social media monitoring tool. Using the report they were able to glean insights into the prominence of certain topics by consumers and the trending of the topics that were most important to Chevron.

Maybe Radian6 , SM2 , Trackur or one of these social media listening tools I mention when I give talks on social media. This is a good way to identify trends or product perception so you can take action to correct misconceptions or adjust your phrasing to fit the market’s vocabulary. Look for the trends and swarms of discussion.

It’s mentioned in the comments along with several dozen other tips on social media on Small Business Trends. I’ve been using a social monitoring tool called Alterian SM2. It’s not recommended to setup and run multiple social media channels all at once. But with proper metrics in place and a good plan, anything is possible.

And there are several good monitoring tools: Radian6, Filtrbox, Trackur, SM2 and eCairn. Google Trends and Google Insights for Search can also provide valuable data.
