We ended up having a great conversation about online privacy, which was made all the more interesting by the students relating their experiences firsthand. In order to start up a conversation about privacy, I explained Foursquare, and how people “check in” at Starbucks, the movies, work, etc., Poptropica, etc. Poptropica, etc.

The latest round of site traffic-building scare tactics was spurred by Please Rob Me , a web site that lists people who disclose through social networks that they have left their homes. Are there privacy risks to using so-called location-based services? The bottom line is that privacy is a complicated matter. Absolutely.

The most far reaching announcement is the introduction of what is called the Social Graph API, a convention that allows developers (anyone with a Web site or a blog) to easily embed “Like” buttons and other functions on their sites, allowing users to “bring” their Faceboook identities wherever they go on the Web, outside of Facebook’s walled garden.

You have to wonder why the Obama administration isn’t hinting at a bailout for Facebook in the event that the social network’s latest privacy kerfuffle threatens the very vitality of the global poking grid. It will back down on a few missteps, tweak the privacy settings, and update its privacy agreement.

Any serious adult user of Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace knows these sites are both social and anti-social. They need to be taught the importance of privacy and personal space, the value of real relationships, and to be aware of their own self worth. Togetherville is also the Web 2.0 version of the Happy Meal toy. My daughter is nine.
