The workaround solution involves hunting down a business’s Google+ page, which used to be linked to their Google map pack listings… until the local stack replaced them. On the old Google map pack, it was possible to list your business as a strictly service area business, without a brick and mortar presence. Not Anymore!

If you searched for a “plumber in Palo Alto” a year ago, you would have probably seen seven local listings (A through G), plus a few Yelp listings below that. When I tried that search today, I saw four Yelp listings above the local listings. Don’t think of this as the “Yelp Update”, however.

While there are many changes happening right now to the way Google displays listings for small businesses, Google has made it crystal clear that business reviews will play a huge role in the future. Of the top local listings (those are your A through G results), you should generally see a descending number of Google+ reviews.

Almost every business tends to have at least a few reviews that are filtered out of the list, and they’re easy to find. There is a very good chance that you’ll see a downward trend in the number of Google+ reviews among the local listings (those are the ones labeled with letters A through G).

These may include a Yelp listing, a Yelp SERP, a website for a plumbing company in Pleasanton, a website for a plumbing company in Livermore, and more. Many websites share their lists of citations, so even one “bad” citation can appear on several websites. New ranking elements are constantly being added to the list.
