Because I use Twitter as a way to meet and connect with new people, why not follow a lot of people? I unfollow if they send spam or inappropriate DMs or if they promote their own content too much in the stream. I unfollow if they promote weight loss or get rich quick schemes. I also use Manage Flitter to unfollow people who are not active.

Whether meeting for coffee, talking over a meal, or the digital equivalent of having a Skype conversation, I needed a mutual bind to be friends on those sites. I started 2014 with a mission to use social networks without rules. On Facebook and LinkedIn, I wrote that I needed a pre-existing relationship to connect. Ditto me on their photos.

Over on my city council blog , for instance, I published a post on February 23 with the meeting agenda for February 28 — and, because I subscribe to my own blogs, I blinked when that post was received on March 5. Response times went downhill and bloggers like me got fed up with inaccurate metrics and delayed delivery. Unacceptable.

I do my best to have both breakfast and lunch meetings booked with either business prospects or business people I would like to connect with. I am often called into meetings to review our strategy and creative work. When I am not traveling, my early morning is dedicated to my family (getting the kids ready and off to school).
