Back in October Facebook rolled out an experiment called the “Explore Feed”, moving non-promoted posts from publishers and brands to a tab on the left side of desktop feeds where Facebook said one could find content “automatically customized for each person based on content that might be interesting to them”.

A client contacted me this morning, upset because her “reach” seems to be seriously declining on Facebook. For some reason Facebook chooses Reach to be the metric graphed on the insights page, and it’s little understood, so here’s the long and the short of it. Here’s how Facebook defines reach. Why am I suspicious?

It works with most major social networks, namely: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram, and YouTube; in terms of scheduling, thought, with all but YouTube. Write it all out on a calendar and decide when you will publish. Then either write them before your scheduled publishing date and set them to go live on time or scedule the day you will write them and publish. You can set up some keyword searches in advance and see posts almost as they are published. Make a list.

Of course there are the obvious apps like Linkedin , Facebook , Skype etc. Publish a magazine style page on any topic you like, then populate it with content you curate from your desktop or your mobile device. Obviously I couldn’t keep from sharing a few of my favorite social apps too, it’s what I do. Sprout Social.

Just before I get ready to publish it something changes! Shortly afterward Facebook launched their own app, Riff for mobile devices which allows you to create a video on your device and your Facebook friends can add their own clips to the video creating a collaborative story. I’ve been writing this post for weeks.
