And judging by the SEOMOz toolbar’s ‘NoFollow’ indicator, the Facebook comments are followed links back to Facebook everytime. There are viable alternatives already out there – for instance Disqus, as used on this blog. Not reward Facebook for doing nothing.

Various software solutions attempt to curb the constant flood of spam comments, for instance Akismet , and most commenting systems also include moderation tools, such as Disqus , which runs here. The usual example is Fred Wilson’s community at avc.com. Is that frustration enough to stop me, or others, from reading?

It’s doubtful that the comments have any real benefit to the commenter as most blogs have nofollow links in comments which kill any search ranking benefits and nobody in their right mind will click their links as they’re so obviously spammy. If they have too many friends and not many followers, for example, you might not want to follow them. You might choose to only follow active users (who tweet between 1 and 100 times a month, for example) and not users who are either way too inactive or are too excessive. Moreover, you can also nofollow people based on their tweets.

your initial examples are problematic in my opinion: (A) If you or your client does not have an advertising budget, then how *are* they paying you to email people? As such, you deserve to call the shots within reason, and the first illustration you gave is a fine examples of this. I used her as an example for others.
