As an example, I followed two major news aggregators for awhile, but the updates were just too frequent for my needs. If you have a software application and people follow your product, by all means, set up a Twitter feed and let your users subscribe! Tamar is also the author of The New Community Rules (July 2009).

The reason is that people didn’t have aggregate power: they were individual voices that a news channel or a company can choose to ignore. Not just being talked about but be an active voice in the community. In a sense, they can become part of the community. Again, by no means is this new. That’s not the point.

With the initiative for Facebook to be open and to empower businesses to host pages that celebrate their business, offering deals and giving the community the ability to converse directly with the business or entity these pages represent, you forgot about accountability. And now there are Community Pages! Who the heck needs it?

As I had been doing a lot of research on social networking, the department head and myself came up with a course named New Communication Technologies in Organizational Life. However, I was able to aggregate many of the pieces I had coming into the course as my students worked on the class project: an online conference on nanotechnology.

I became a big fan of playing games (bingo especially) at a little hub on AOL called RabbitJack’s Casino , which was considered a unique community within the AOL borders with a close-knit group of people from all walks of life. Today, Facebook or MySpace will help you locate lost family or reunite with old friends.

These scenarios come to fruition in spontaneous communities, on social networks, and other self-service tools – all thanks to the availability of low cost technology and access to the world wide web. You can also not use the tools correctly or not behave appropriately within communities around the tools and market poorly.
