One of the things I was pleasantly surprised to find in the first few days was that Avaya has their own Yammer account within their firewall. So naturally I signed up and started sharing. I immediately asked my entire team to join since I wanted us to post some discussion threads and get reaction from sales people on our upcoming programs.

So, what do I tell these folks when they ask me why no one is reading their forum posts, commenting on their blogs, or editing their wiki pages? Post your blog entry, wiki content, forum thread, etc. Tell me what benefit I get from taking time out of my day to click over to your blog/wiki page/forum and read it. Cross-promote.

I was rarely able to carve out an hour a day to read and comment on other blogs, discussion forums, online communities and books. Despite the availability of tools like hello.bah.com , Yammer , and instant messenger, email remains the least common denominator. Not only did I not use email less, I think I actually used it more often.

Buddypress forum karma points. If Twitter is working with Foursquare, why can’t Yammer and other social enterprise communication tools play with badges and points? Drupal (as used by Whitehouse) has a bunch of social scorecards – if you are considering running your intranet on Atrium, a possible addon?

Use email less (internally) – One thing I’ve realized is that if I keep answering people’s emails, people will continue to send them to me, even if I explicitly tell them that they’re more likely to get a hold of me by posting their question/comment to my internal blog, contact me on Yammer, use my internal wiki page, etc.
