Here are a few I recommend: Google Alerts. Google Reader. TweetDeck or HootSuite. Google Alerts help you do that by honing in on certain keywords that are important to you. Google will notify you when those keywords are mentioned online – in a blog post, on a website, in social media, or wherever.

Google Reader constantly checks your favorite news sites and blogs for new content. Some of twhirl’s features: runs on both Windows (2000/XP/Vista/Win7) and Mac OSX.

I can say that life was a lot more chaotic before I found Google Reader (hat tip to Robert Scoble who turned me on to Google Reader). A typical day starts at 6am with answering the new email that came in over night and then some morning reading in my RSS reader (see photo of this mornings Google Reader).

I use Google Chrome for somethings but you can’t beat FireFox’s massive line up of plug-ins. TweetDeck – The multiple columns of TweetDeck make it so easy to sort and follow people that without it Twitter gets difficult to manage at times. I open 2 FireFox windows, TweetDeck , and Foobar.

Once you have created a few lists (or found good ones to follow on sites like Listorious , you can login to Twitter and go straight to your lists, or setup your TweetDeck , HootSuite , or other Twitter applications to show you the people you are following on those lists. Facebook Friends List.
