What the iPhone is to smart phones, flash mobs are to marketing. While a slew of such campaigns have taken place in India, one that caught the fancy of many is the recent flash mob organized by the IBM OnDemand Community. While there were 200 people who participated, there were over 2,500 views online on YouTube.

This post takes a look at how grassroots, user generated flash mobs got hijacked and became agency created, professionally choreographed and danced by hired talent, to flog products. Gobsmacked live audience, hidden cameras, YouTube fame. If married to a product, a viral video ad ensues. Or so we are told. Say Cheese!

Suffice it to say, the owners of this restaurant, took it to another level via these Kitchen Nightmare Youtube videos. Watching the videos of the show you can see why. Because the buzz of the show, the videos and of what the owners did started to play itself out on Facebook. Here comes my point and it’s about Yelp.

The Twist Image team spent over six weeks in training for a very special Flash Mob that took place on Halloween in Montreal. I had too much travel to make the commitment, on the day of the flash mob I was in two big client presentations and ultimately, this event involves two things I'm really not good at: dressing up and dancing.
