Cost Per Click (CPC). Now AdSense do a combination of CPC and CPM ads—they mix them in. When you sell a text link on your site, the person buying the link is usually doing it for search engine ranking purposes. The action might be a sale but could also be them signing up for a service, leaving an email address, etc.

In my experience, sites that make the most money with Adsense are ones that receive traffic from search engines and give users a taste of what they’re looking for, but not everything.
