I came across this very comprehensive blog post by David Ensinger from February 2014 in which he outlines his preferred icon stack markup , which includes favicons, iOS, Android and Windows 8 tiles. You need to reference the tile images either in your head <meta> or by placing all the image links and metadata in an xml config file.
