If it is worth it to you to tick off a bunch of your online friends to publicly proclaim that you just earned a GymRat badge on Foursquare and you’re comfortable with the privacy issues of announcing where you are at every given moment, then more power to you. No badge, no mayorship, no virtual prize, no free sandwich is worth it.

Keeping up-to-date on which parties are where and when, which are invitation-only, open to anyone with a SXSW badge or open to anyone period, is an exercise unto itself. The hotels right downtown aren’t cheap and get booked early, so keep that in mind. It can be much more affordable than the hotels. Is SXSW for You?

When I’m on the road, I try to either bring good shoes for running & walking or stay at a hotel that has a fitness facility. When you stand up for someone else’s rights and lend your voice in cause of something unpopular, you are risking your reputation for theirs. That is heroism. That is heroism.

Even with more and more sessions being staged outside the convention center in adjacent hotels, SXSW cannot get much bigger without serious impact to the attendee experience. At SXSW, each attendee had their unique QR code printed on their name badge. At the end of the day, I hardly used my badge. May go badgeless next year.
