Whenever I present or give classes on monetizing social networks and online communities people usually have two questions. SMS other social networks are built on SMS revenues such as SMSFun. Twitter has probably done their dash with doing SMS deals by now. Threadless, YouTube, MySpace have all had that in the past.

You have to create content, be part of many communities, and proceed incrementally. Especially in comparison to many other communication programs like traditional PR, TV advertising, outdoor advertising and others, social media actually offers pretty solid metrics. That’s not a “wave the magic wand&# scenario.

We look at Freemium revenue in social networks and online communities including asking that: if freemium is the business model of giving it all (or most) of the services away for free , how can you then charge for it? per member per year over at MySpace is NOT high. And what is free stuff anyway – marketing? advertising?
