Recently, Google took the position that press releases were simply link schemes , advertorials for a business. Therefore, all links in press releases should have the nofollow attribute added to the links, so that the press release does not pass any SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) value to the website it’s linking to.

If you have ever received a manual penalty from Google , then you most likely have received this message in Google Webmaster Tools that could be an unnatural link warning , similar to this one that my client received: The message reads something like this: Dear site owner or webmaster of [link]. Sincerely, Google Search Quality Team.

Just as low-level article directories (ezinearticles, articlesbase, and others) got hurt by Google’s Panda Update in 2013, I predict that Google will hurt sites abusing guest blogging in 2013. I don’t feel guest blogging is bad, nor that all bloggers who do it will be penalized by Google. A real person.

A day later you notice the post has been indexed by Google, and it’s at #4 on the second page one of your main keywords. A week later, you check that keyword again in Google, and lo and behold, it’s now at #5 on page one. Here is what happened when Google tried a search engine without links ).) Not great but it’s a start.

The extent to which Google and other search engines are indexing and ranking social traffic is still relatively unclear, but one thing is quite clear, social media matters. Moz conducted a study in the same year and found that pages with activity from Google+, Facebook, Twitter, and general comments tend to rank higher.

Though at times it may seem like I’m being a bit harsh on Google, I have acknowledged that the job their staff have must be one of the hardest in the world. We’ve all see them – they leave comments on your post that are completely irrelevant and stuffed full of keyword rich links in an attempt to rank for those words in Google. One blogger who I came across lately said that he never leaves links because he heard it can get him in trouble with Google.
