Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs Philip Crowley recently tweeted about Iran and Egypt and cities therein, he referenced each physical location by a hashtag. By prefacing a keyword with the # sign, the word is tagged and becomes a link known as a hashtag; here are real-time hashtag searches about #Iran and #Egypt , for instance.

They’re also retweeting dozens of people who are loving the #KotexForReal hashtag that is seen at the end of the above video (that’s aired numerous times on TV). “The beauty of a socially driven world is that the community feeds itself, uncovering topics and helping drive the discussion.” I tweeted my reaction.

Hashtags help me discern. I use lists and hashtags to listen. As you can tell from my 150,000+ tweets, 80% are conversational, 15% are about the #CMchat hashtag, and 5% express my tomfoolery. It was very hard for me to engage with anyone since my feed was full of people I didn’t know.
