Taking Badges Further: I use incentives to reward influencers in my online communities in three ways: Points for repetitive, ongoing and countable activity. Obvious one is Community Moderator for those that volunteer community admin duties. This is a absolutely hideous yet interesting problem for me in communities.

So, what do I tell these folks when they ask me why no one is reading their forum posts, commenting on their blogs, or editing their wiki pages? Why are Enterprise 2.0 implementations of blogs, wikis, or forums not living up to the expectations of the technology? To add on to your ideas, I would also suggest that organizations would do well to invest in community managers – those people who blog, garden wiki pages, and moderate forums as their primary job.

Use email less (internally) – One thing I’ve realized is that if I keep answering people’s emails, people will continue to send them to me, even if I explicitly tell them that they’re more likely to get a hold of me by posting their question/comment to my internal blog, contact me on Yammer, use my internal wiki page, etc.
