PLEs are meant to simplify managing these artefacts, creating meaning through aggregation, linking and metadata tagging (eg comments, keywords). This diagram illustrates how the several layers are, in reality, often interpenetrating each other, and doing so in a variety of ways. The elaborate social infrastructure of academic disciplines (9-11), of hobbyist groups (12), and of work groups (6, 8) is very supportive of monitoring. See Menzel (13) for excellent examples.
