RSS feeds are the blood vessels of the social web. You can do this manually with RSS technology. And there are several good monitoring tools: Radian6, Filtrbox, Trackur, SM2 and eCairn. Google Analytics is free and it is an excellent system. A branded, interactive video player that gives you analytics.

To be fair, I’ve only included those I’ve actually used (Radian6, Sysomos, Spiral 16) or tested (Meltwater, SM2). Socialmention.com is basically a social search engine, if the business name is unique it can be a good option. I'm currently using SM2 for most of my clients, and like how easy it is to use.
