Directory submissions can be performed automatically in a spammy way, too, but then you have the Best of The Web directory, the Yahoo directory and Dmoz which, after all this time, Google still seem to give credit for having a mention there. Those came two years later in 2012, and more recently now in 2014. My prediction was correct.
