I was unable to get statistics for “lurkers&# , but I am sure it is high. Community building is not a “Set it and forget it&# activity but a “Care and Feeding&# activity. Here are a few statistics I received from a Salesforce community manager: 233,330 registered users. 700 questions are asked each week.
