A Jakob Nielsen study once found that 90% of online community users are lurkers (read or observe without contributing) with only 9% of users contributing ‘a little’ and 1% actively contributing. I find that people have responded to this and that comment threads generally stay constructive as a result. Be humble.

Here are a few statistics I received from a Salesforce community manager: 233,330 registered users. I was unable to get statistics for “lurkers&# , but I am sure it is high. They have done an excellent job balancing freedoms of community members and protecting the company identity. 700 questions are asked each week.
