I have actually heard this exact sentiment from several companies and agencies recently, wondering whether they should increase their Facebook efforts because the size of the member community is just so overwhelming. If your community is there, then you should be too, and the question is really rhetorical, isn’t it?

If you can afford it, buy professional listening tools, like Radian6 or others in that category. Use heat map tools like CrazyEgg to see how people relate to your site. Track things like audience/community sentiment (positive/negative) if you want to map effort to results. Get a Wordpress.com account for its OpenID benefits.
