Even though I often communicate through social channels, such as Facebook, Twitter or chat messages, my mailbox remains a sacred place where the most important conversations take place. If someone read the first 3 paragraphs, they probably don’t want to buy your stuff. And when we hate it, we really hate it.

Whether at a live networking event or connecting with people through virtual social networking sites, no one want to receive sales pitches, marketing emails, and links to buy the “latest, greatest product on the market guaranteed to make you rich in just 10 days.&# tune us out. To an observer, maybe my movie review posts seem trivial.

Talk (And Listen) To Me We’ve all read the advice that the most effective ways to leverage the opportunities to build relationships with new people online is to be engaging and interested in them, by having a conversation that includes both listening and responding. Before long, I was able to fix almost anything which went wrong and knew to buy replacement parts at the local Pick-and-Pull. The first lesson anyone learns about the blogosphere is “listening&# before jumping in to conversations. Maybe that ultimately leads to more engaged conversations. I’ve become my own friend.
