There are three primary benefits: awareness via virality and social proof; loyalty and rewards; and market research. Building brand loyalty: rewarding/recognizing customers who come in frequently and encouraging them to continue Foursquare and Gowalla are, in my opinion, focusing too much on this gaming aspect.
