In last week’s #SMCEDU chat, we discussed the issue of grading students in classes that teach social media. What about those classes that aren’t teaching social media, is there a place for social media in those classes too? How should social media fit into the world of academia? And then, how do we grade them?

Social media-focused classes for the core curriculum is an excellent idea. I don’t think it should be specifically called a social media class; rather, it should be a well-rounded class that focuses on communicating in a digital world. It almost boggles or “bloggles” our minds!

is something that you can learn about from a book, course, class, or test. It soon became clear that the attendees of this class were far more advanced in Enterprise 2.0 tools like blogs, social networking, wikis, etc. tools like blogs, social networking, wikis, etc. I think that above all, it’s learned from doing.

Some were in media relations classes where they were learning about the differences between pitching reporters and bloggers. That’d be like adding a class for “Business Email 101.&# Social media shouldn’t get it’s own special class – social media IS media. If not, why? Do they apply?

Show them how they can use their organization’s internal blogs, wiki, bookmarks, etc. Once we deployed internal blogs, a wiki, and forums, that’s when my work internally with social media really took off. I went in and created dozens of wiki pages on every social media tool I found. I blogged every chance I got.

&# That’s the question I was recently asked by a colleague working on a project where they had just deployed an internal wiki. They said, “that’s what we want!&# They installed a wiki. And they waited… They soon discovered that their users weren’t actually, you know, using the wiki.
