ly, aka Threely , is a fairly new entrant in the URL shortening game, and so far, I really like it. The most obvious benefit is that Threely makes shorter URLs, 15 characters vs. 18 characters from is.gd , which I believe was the previous title holder for shortest URL shortener. It’s easy to lose a URL with Threely.

Remember, URL shortening wasn't built into Twitter at the beginning.) Are trivial Foursquare Twitter updates especially annoying, or just more of the same? Twitter was built for trivial status updates. Then came link sharing. Even today, everything on Twitter can be divided into two categories: status updates and shared content.

The purpose of each of these is not readily apparent, but by hovering over any one of them you can see the URL, which tells you what the feed is for. There are icons allowing readers to easily sign up for any of several RSS feeds the paper offers.

We’ve recently had an obsession with brevity in the form of Twitter, and shortened URLs for example. Social media just got faster. Immediacy is one of the Six Valuable Attributes of Social Media. The ability to communicate about something as it happens, as opposed to hours or even days later, is a big part of the appeal of social media.

Brightkite automatically creates a short URL for every check-in and cross-posts to Twitter, Flickr and Facebook, though the Facebook implementation has had some issues. (This is a critical capability and one Brightkite did not always have.) You can post a picture and/or note in association with your check-in.

With Twitter’s 140-character limit, which generally forces shortened URLs, it is impossible to tell at a glance if a link is safe. Unless you use a URL lengthener, an application that restores the original link based on a shortened link from bit.ly, is.gd, tinyurl, etc. But shortened URLs pose many problems.
