NOVEMBER 10, 2011
After dabbling in Facebook or opening a Twitter account, the next question is often, “what now?” While using social media for business purposes has been around for the better part of 5 years now, we’re reaching a place where businesses are starting to ask “what should I be doing with social media?” ” Its a fair question. Why Social Media? Listen first.

JULY 28, 2011
Laser focused and sincere the question came: “How many followers should I have on Twitter? Of course you need some followers on Twitter, otherwise its as if your standing in the middle of the forest with a blow horn.what possible effect could that have (except to scare a few racoons)? A prime example is this article on Aston Kutcher who is wildly admired for his Twitter fan base. Keep in mind, that a little over 95% of Twitter users have less than 500 followers and only.05% have more than 10,000 followers. That’s the artform of Twitter. Ahh, yes.

DECEMBER 29, 2011
Distinguish my social media profiles: I’ve been using Facebook and Twitter for years and with the introduction of Google+ (which I am enjoying) I’ll be defining what information you’ll see where. I’ve gotten a little lazy, especially on Twitter, about STARTING the conversation. This is the 2nd year that I’ve published my social media resolutions. Check.

Social Media Complainers – your new BFF's
MARCH 31, 2011
I’ve always advised my clients that its better to have people complain in an open forum where it can be addressed. Social Media During Emergencies
OCTOBER 28, 2012
I couldn’t help but reflect on the fact that the tsunami sirens didn’t tell me as much as Twitter did. Is Twitter today’s warning siren? I was reliant exclusively on Twitter (mostly), Facebook and my car radio to get updates for the tsunami. The radio station I was listening to constantly referenced Twitter, as did the TV station before I left my house. At one point, waiting for the all-clear, when a collective sigh swept throughout the state, Twitter WAS the news. Bing’s Twitter maps app is a great visual aid for this.

JULY 6, 2011
Talk about making Twitter Karma work for you! Photo by Ken Lund, Creative Commons. Interesting question, isn’t it? Generally speaking, I’d say the answer is yes, but the REASONS you should care might surprise you. Here’s some different ways of looking at it: The care and feeding of followers and fans. I’m not a believer in checking my followers to see what they can do for me. My question is “what can I do for them. Ultimately, I think this attitude pays big dividends, but it is the long road and the high road. you make them giggle now and then? Promise.

All of these are things you can set on autopilot with the help of a 3rd party, but you can not do it directly from Twitter. Welcome Direct Messages are both a useful tool and the bane of the Twitter existence. A DM is essentially a private message within Twitter; the person whom your sending the DM to has to be a follower. For those services, I use and suggest SocialOomph.

The REAL Lesson in the NRA Twitter Post
JULY 23, 2012
The Real Social Media Lesson Behind the NRA Twitter Post After the Aurora Shooting. Of course, they could have also done a Twitter search to see WHY Aurora was trending. Last week’s shooting in Aurora left the nation in shock and renewed discussions about gun control. In the midst of this terrible tragedy, a poorly timed Tweet came from the NRA: “ Good morning, shooters. Happy Friday! Weekend plans? ” The Tweet was quickly removed and the NRA issued a statement that a single person unaware of the news sent the Tweet. I do it. I recommend it. Its not practical.
Socially Speaking What do YOU expect from brands and companies using social media?
JULY 13, 2011
At what point do you get “brand fatigue in social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter? Also, on Twitter, I’m going to use the hashtag #sociallyspeaking to discuss this. For sometime now, I’ve talked at you and with you about social media karma and best practices. Conversely, we all have our own expectations about what a brand/company does with their social media profiles. You sometimes agree with me. Go ahead, let it all out. Besides Zappos. =).

5 things I’ve learned from failed blog posts
JULY 19, 2011
We had a small amount of discussion on Twitter around the hashtag #sociallyspeaking, but even that was pretty weak. The conversation took place elsewhere: Sometimes, instead of commenting on a blog post, people will choose to engage on another outpost, Facebook or Twitter for example. The audiences on your Facebook, Twitter and G+ are different. I mean, it was crickets. Hardly.
Who we are…not what we are in social media
AUGUST 3, 2011
I can tell you that my audience on Twitter is mostly male. If you grew up in a traditional marketing or pr or design field, you probably had the implications and research of demographics beat into your head. You probably studied trends and learned all about how to market to and and communicate with particular generations. Maybe you even sought to discover emerging trends. Social media really messes all that up, doesn’t it? Have you ever heard as I do, the sound of the wind blowing when you look at demographics for social networks? They are practically meaningless. Individually.
Klout and Kred – Social Influence Comparison

It also breaks down where engagement events are occurring for the time period (comments, Digg, Twitter).
