For my students: RSS allows you to manually (or autopost) Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn etc updates from a 3rd party site. RSS Icons – any colour or the word RSS or Subscribe . Adding hidden RSS feeds from Facebook (may or may not work from time to time). With all that though, there's no doubt to those of us, the most devoted and perhaps heaviest users of Google Reader (I saw some stats that I promised not to share that suggested before Google Reader killed sharing I had some of the highest numbers of shares on the site), will miss the service. Many are even screaming that the death of Google Reader is the death of RSS and the beginning (or end?) I hope RSS makes a come-back. Alas, the day has come.

I use a RSS reader and read feeds because it is part of my writing process. Lately, my RSS reading habits have changed. My RSS reading is mostly information gathering or browsing. Visiting personal or professional sites with no specific goal in mind other than to ???stay Photo by Lynetter. I haven't given up on it completely, but my process has changed. My feeds are organized into folders and the folders ordered by priority.

I follow a lot of blogs and various RSS feeds. Plus, when I’m ready to periodically purge my RSS feeds, I can look at the Twitter handles and figure out quickly whether I have engaged with them or not. In perhaps one of my most controversial articles (unintentionally), I wrote a week or two ago about how both Twitter and Facebook both quietly removed RSS from user accounts and Pages. Of course, with Facebook, on user accounts that made sense since they were intended to be private, but with Pages, 100% public versions of the site, it didn't make sense that they would remove the links and access to be able to subscribe to updates via RSS.

Though niches that have more web savvy audiences like marketing or technology are more likely to be affected, this is going to impact anyone who has built up their RSS readership. Also, doing it now means you can alert them again in the future with enough of a gap to remind them without annoying people who don’t subscribe via RSS.
