This is the screenshot of my email newsletters signup form at my blog. Today I wanted to share what I have learned on how to make email newsletters better. Use a RSS-to-Email Service. Using a RSS-to-Email service makes 2 things happen: 1. Using an email newsletters service allows you to use templates that have been crossed-tested on several browsers. Want to find out how to boost RSS subscriber conversion? I’d been meaning to test my RSS subscription page for a while, and finally got around to it. Here’s what the old page looked like: The newsletter top. The newsletter bottom. The RSS subscription page was way too busy! What that means is that I don’t know the difference these changes made on conversions for people clicking on the RSS button.

Set up e-mail subscription – Few people within the general public ever figured out RSS enough to use an RSS reader, but everyone understands e-mail. Publish a blog promotion newsletter – While everyone understands e-mail, not everyone will subscribe to your blog posts by e-mail. However, many people will subscribe to your newsletter because they already understand that concept of a newsletter.

Prior to that (in and around my teenage years), I was always fascinated with journalism, newsletters, writing, media and marketing those messages. On top of that, those who were interested could subscribe to my writing (via RSS ) and be notified the second I published anything online? newsletters. As much as we embrace change, we are all creatures of habit. Back in 1988, I became interested in actually publishing magazines.

This is a graphic that I shared on Twitter late last week that illustrates, in part, why I use email newsletters on my photography blog. The graphic was taken 12 hours after I sent my weekly newsletter and shows the traffic (visitor numbers) to a single post. The initial spike in traffic occurred when the post went live (that traffic was generated largely by RSS, Twitter, and Facebook). The second spike was almost completely achieved through the newsletter.

What that means is, if you had subscribers to your blog who were using Google Reader, then they either have to find another RSS news aggregrator in order to subscribe to your blog or you just lost a subscriber. Even today, there are still people who don’t know what an RSS reader is, but everyone knows what e-mail is and uses it. Here are 4 ways you can spy on the competition surreptitiously without spending any money: Subscribe to newsletters – Your competitors, at least some of them, likely have an e-mail newsletter. Subscribe to all competitor newsletters through that e-mail address, and read every issue. The best way to do that is to subscribe to their RSS feeds, or you can subscribe by e-mail. RSS Folders. Other RSS Cleanup Methods. Email filters should be applied from the moment you start receiving something new, whether it is a newsletter or alerts from your bank. Give newsletter subscriptions their own label (especially the ones you know you probably aren’t interested in aside from getting the free ebook or other freebie that enticed you into signing up in the first place). Twitterfeed, HootSuite RSS Feeds, and Blog Posting Schedules.

Long before RSS feeds, Twitter , Facebook and more, I was a heavy subscriber to email e-newsletters (in fact, I still am). " This way, I could shuttle those many e-newsletter over to that folder and get to them when there was a moment to read. That folder is where e-newsletters went to die. Now, I take the time to go through each newsletter - as they come in - and bookmark the key articles. Who amongst us is able to consume all of the content that we save?

I subscribe to many e-newsletters (like Mashable , MediaPost and more) that provide me with a quick glance into what's going on. It was great for me, maybe great for you and a bunch of journalists and media folks , but the general public never latched on the the magic that is RSS. RSS was the next generation of newsfeed, and it was a key driver in making blogging popular and accessible. For my dollar, blogging isn't about RSS, newsreaders or any of that stuff.

Whenever I add another RSS feed to Google Reader or follow someone interesting on Twitter , I stop to realize that it's another bite in my voracious appetite for more and more information. You will never be able to read every e-newsletter, Blog post, tweet or listen/watch every Podcast or interesting YouTube video. Human beings have an unquenchable thirst for information. not just knowledge. Why are we like this?

A Focus on RSS Numbers. The number of people who subscribe to your blog via RSS is one of the most meaningless metrics because it’s not an accurate representation of who is really reading your blog. I’ve found blogs with 1,000′s of RSS subscribers and virtual no comments. One simple way to improve your list is to repurpose your archives for use in your newsletter (credit to Nathalie Lussier ). I have also put together some examples of perfect newsletters here. The Promotions inbox is affecting everyone, especially since the old ways of developing email newsletters go against Google’s new rules. Avoid RSS In my experience, almost every RSS feeds lands in my Promotions tab. Because RSS is automated, Google can surmise that it’s not being sent by a real person, so it doesn’t belong in Gmail Primary (even though I subscribed to it).

The two most important channels are email and RSS. Several services exist which help you to offer easy RSS & Email subscription options, ranging from RSS subscription facilitators (turning your RSS feed into a nice-to-look-at subscription screen which anyone can understand), RSS2Email as well as classic Email marketing services. Feedburner offers solutions for both RSS and Email. For the RSS-part you can then use Feedblitz or Feedpress.

E-mail newsletters and RSS feeds. E-mail newsletters are a still a major traffic driver for many publishers and e-mail remains a powerful communication channel that isn’t going anywhere. Specific to link building, newsletters offer a great vehicle for content discovery which indirectly leads to links and social sharing. So maintain a decent selection of feeds and don’t let the impending shutdown of Google Reader move you away from RSS.
