It was originally part of a class wiki. PLEs are meant to simplify managing these artefacts, creating meaning through aggregation, linking and metadata tagging (eg comments, keywords). Examples include YouOS , 30Boxes and NetVibes. These are content management systems (CMS) which handle many types of content including a wiki.
