This article is more than 3 years old.

On Sunday, Jeopardy host Alex Trebek passed away at age 80 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The Canadian-born Trek had hosted the popular game show since 1984 and presided over more than 8,000 episodes. He had remained upbeat throughout his treatment and filmed his last show just 10 days prior to his passing. That episode will reportedly air on Christmas Day.

Trebek’s popularity with fans was certainly noted by the response of his passing on social media. Clearly, he was so much more than just a game show host.

Good Morning America host Robin Roberts (@RobinRoberts) expressed what a kind soul Trebek was, tweeting, "It was always a privilege to be in the presence of #AlexTrebek. You hung on to his every word. @TJHolmes brings us a look back at the legacy of the @Jeopardy host after his valiant fight with pancreatic cancer. Tributes continuing to pour in from around the world coming up @GMA"

Journalist Tim Elliott posted a photo of his choice of purple tie on Facebook noting, "Rockin' the purple this morning in honor of #AlexTrebek. Purple is the color that represents pancreatic cancer awareness. Trebek died from the disease on Sunday morning. He was such a smart, classy, and charismatic guy. A cultural icon, too. As someone who regularly stumbles when they speak on TV. I've always been in awe of his smooth delivery! My afternoon Jeopardy! routine will never be the same #RIP"

Actress Dawn Wells also posted on Facebook, "I wanted to express my sadness of Alex Trebek’s passing. I remember emailing him about 2 years ago when the news first broke. I admired his bravery, positive attitude, and humbled approach in addressing his illness. I do not know what else to say other than we have lost another good man. My heart goes out to his family. They have lost as well as we have lost a very special person.  This I know. God Bless."

There was an outpouring of responses from around the world. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) was among the world leaders to pay tribute to the Canadian-born Trebek. "We have lost an icon. Almost every night for more than three decades, Alex Trebek entertained and educated millions around the world, instilling in so many of us a love for trivia. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who are mourning this tremendous loss."

Former Jeopardy champion James Holzhauer @James_Holzhauer) also took to Twitter to offer his thoughts, "I keep thinking about the last time I spent with Alex Trebek. We were at a media panel promoting #JeopardyGOAT. Ken, Brad, EP Harry Friedman, Alex and I cracked wise about the show for our allotted time, then the reporters approached the stage for interviews."

Retired U.S. Navy Captain and former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly (@StationCDRKelly) stated what we all knew to be true, "Alex Trebek was all class, all the time. Sorry to hear of his passing but I know his legacy will live on with @Jeopardy and his philanthropic pursuits. I learned so much from the show and him. He will be sorely missed."

While thousands of fans and countless past contestants have expressed their condolences, a few who were "answers" to the questions also took to social media to express their feelings on the passing of Mr. Trebek.

American astrophysicist, planetary scientist, author, and science communicator Neil de Grasse Tyson shared a photo on Facebook with him holding a "Jeopardy flag" and said, "A keepsake from my several appearances in video Daily Doubles. And now, one last clue: KNOWLEDGE for $1,000

The official Twitter account of the Hershey Bears (@TheHersheyBears) hockey team posted, "It was a honor to hear the legendary Alex Trebek talk about us on @Jeopardy  in 2018. The hockey world mourns his loss. "

Professional football player Larry Fitzgerarld (@LarryFitzgerald) retweeted teammate Mark Dalton (CardsMarkD) 2017 tweet and added, "Rest In Peace to the legendary Alex Trebek...will always remember when I heard this was a Jeopardy clue. Thank you for the knowledge you passed on to so many."

The Neon Museum posted a Jeopardy screenshot on Facebook of when it was an answer on the quiz show back in September 2018, also adding, "Rest in Peace and thank you, Alex Trebek"

As we mourn the loss of the beloved game show host, it may have been Twitter User Sean Don (@BigSean) who have summed it best, "Who is, Alex Trebek! RIP" responding to the question, "This game show host will always be the greatest to ever do it, and Jeopardy will never be the same without him."
