I’m taking two seminar courses at school this term, and they each resemble a particular form of social media. A seminar is different from a regular course in that it necessarily involves interaction with the students — a seminar is to a regular lecture course as web 2.0 is to web 1.0.

There have also been doctors that have used social networking tools, like Twitter, during surgery. You can use the many applications that Facebook offers, so that others can answer questions on a survey, have discussions on the forums, and/or have notes to bring awareness to a topic.

In web hosting, there are hundreds of different forums and sites. When it comes down to it, there is absolutely nothing wrong with engaging in such a way with any social community as long as you have the intentions of the community at heart. The key here is making the mechanics of the social networks transparent.

On a particular forum I am active on (yes, I still use them!), Sadly, this person’s post was pulled by the strict moderators on that forum; the post was purely self-promotional and nothing but. If you’re only on the forum to tell other people to visit your website or to use your product, you won’t go far.
