Google has just won a landmark legal battle involving its fair use/copyright dispute with The Authors Guild. A judge agreed with their argument that scanning pages of published books constitutes fair use. Just head on over to Google Books and start searching. Don’t bet on it.

Copyright Issues Copyright laws vary, but in general, using copyright-protected images as extracts or complements to your posts falls under Fair Use or Fair Dealing. However, using such images as part of your blog’s design may not be considered fair use.

Recently Google announced on its official blog that it will start penalizing sites that are accused of copyright infringement. The announcement may reduce the content theft around the web, since now it is clear that if a site continuously violates copyright laws, it will lose search rankings and possibly even be removed from Google’s index.

If the person doesn’t respond to a cease and desist, you can request that Google take it down. Google (which owns YouTube) is typically relatively quick. That means that when you publish a blog post, you can legally demand that someone who copied it word for word takes it down. The same is true with YouTube.

My Google Page Rank was hovering quite nicely at 6 for quite some time, but dropped to 4 in the past few weeks. I feel that I write fairly useful and/or entertaining blog posts that most seem to find interesting or helpful. My Alex rank continues to climb a bit as I’m dancing in the 300,000 range.
