It might frustrate you to know that LOTS of people are lurkers. People who like results don’t like digital lurkers, because they can’t be tracked. Here’s the rub – lots of people are lurkers, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have value to you. I know I have a LOT of lurkers on my site.

To translate this back into social media jargon, you end up with an audience of lurkers (assuming they stay that long) when you are attempting to get those consumers engaged. Post videos, images, long essay-like posts, short list posts (ahem), link love posts, interviews, case studies, deconstruct a Twitter conversation, try a podcast or live blog an event. This does NOT mean people are not reading – remember your 90% of users who are lurkers. Pay attention to what resonates.

There are thousands of Volkswagen related events in the United States alone every year. On one hand, they regularly attend user created Volkswagen events, take interviews and provide stock photography when asked for forum administrators. It is easy to be a “lurker&# and yet learn a great deal from the community.
